Abstract:The success of cancer therapy relies on long-term specific anti-tumor immune responses mediated by the immune system. In recent years, immunogenic cell death(ICD)has been recognized as an important mechanism for inducing such responses.Photodynamic therapy(PDT)has been demonstrated to induce immunogenic cell death in tumor cells. The core of ICD is the expression or release of damage-associated molecular patterns(DAMPs)by dying cancer cells, which are crucial for activating dendritic cells(DCs)and adaptive immune responses by T cells, leading to the for-mation of long-term immune memory. We will review the research progress on ICD and explore the enhancement of PDT-induced ICD by improving tumor microenvironment hypoxia and subcellular localization of photosensitizers.
