The correlation research between depression and serum cortisol or coping style in medical students

Abstract:Objective To explore the correlations between depression and serum cortisol or coping style in medical students. Methods Self-making general investigation scale, Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire (SCSQ), and Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) were applied on 427 college students. Serum cortisol was assessed on some random students. Results Different between male and female college students compared, found that girls The actively coping score of girls (24.24±6.93) was higher than that of boys (18.94±5.60), and serum cortisol was lower in girls than boys (36.70±7.07 vs. 56.81±11.35). There was significant difference in depression levels of students with active and negative coping styles (P<0.01). Students with experience in student union had significant lower depression score (44.08±6.453) than those without this experience (48.07±7.153). It was obvious that negative coping style was predominant in students from poor family. Family financial status and serum cortisol levels were compared. The serum cortisol in students from poor family was significantly differed from those from average family and good family (P<0.05). Conclusion The depression in medical students is correlated to family financial status, coping style and serum cortisol levels.
