The correlations between IL－6, IL－18, TWEAK and the nutritional status of stable chronic obstructive pulmo-nary disease patients

Abstract：Objective To explore the correlations of serum IL －6, IL－18 and TWEAK levels with the nutrition-al status of stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease ( COPD) patients.Methods Totally 200 patients with stable COPD (COPD group) and 100 healthy persons (control group) were included.The pulmonary function of all subjects were tested.Nutritional status was assessed by mini nutritional assessment (MNA) that classified.The levels of IL－6, IL－18 and TWEAK in serum were assessed by double antibody sandwich ABC －ELISA.Results Compared with control group, the FEV1%, FEV1/FVC%and the MNA values were significantly reduced in COPD group ( P＜0.001).Com-pared with control group , the serum levels of IL －6, IL－18 and TWEAK were significantly increased in COPD group (P＜0.05).In malnourished (risk) COPD subgroup, the levels of IL－6, IL－18 and TWEAK in serum were signifi-cantly increased (P＜0.05) as compared with those in well －nourished COPD subgroup.The TWEAK level was positive-ly correlated with the serum levels of IL －6 and IL－18 in COPD patients (r＝0.334 and 0.262, P＜0.05).The MNA value was negatively correlated with the serum levels of TWEAK , IL －6 and IL －18 ( r ＝－0.292,－0.392 and－0.266, P＜0.05).Conclusion The serum levels of IL －6, IL－18 and TWEAK in patients in stable COPD with malnutrition are higher than those of well －nutrition COPD and healthy people.The IL－6, IL－18 and TWEAK are asso-ciated with nutritional status of patients with COPD.
