Abstract:Objective To evaluate the impact of cognitive-existential group intervention (CE) on the fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) in lung cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Methods Ninety-four lung cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, who had the Fear of Progression Questionnaire-Short Form (FoP-Q-SF) scores ≥ 24, were enrolled and divided into control group (n = 47) and intervention group (n = 47). Patients in the control group received routine nursing, as the participants in the intervention group received CE and telephone follow-up. All patients were assessed with FoP-Q-SF and Mini Mental Adjustment to Cancer Scale (Mini-MAC-19) before and after intervention. Results After CE, the scores of FoP-Q-SF, Mini-MAC-19, helpless/ hopeless, anxiety and positive attitude in intervention group were 23. 49 ± 3. 28, 31. 72 ± 2. 86, 10. 23 ± 1. 99, 7. 66 ± 1. 58 and 14. 06 ± 2. 49, respectively, which were all significantly differed from those in control group (P < 0. 05). Conclusion CE can reduce the level of FCR, improve the ability of psychological adjustment and quality of life for patients with lung cancer.
