Abstract:Objective The purpose of this study was to detect vascular endothelial growth factor -D( VEGF-D) expression, peritumoral and intratumoral lymphatic vessel density ( LVD) in tongue squamous cell carcinoma ( TSCC), and to investigate the relationship between the expression of VEGF -D and LVD in TSCC and their clinical significance . Methods Expression of VEGF-D and LVD in 60 cases of TSCC and 12 cases of normal tongue tissue were detected by means of immunohistochemical staining .Correlation between peritumoral and intratumoral LVD and the expression of VEGF-D was analyzed , as well as their clinical significance .Results The high expression rate of VEGF -D was 60.00%in 60 cases of TSCC , and 25.00%in the control group ( P=0.026 ) .High LVD was observed in 20% in the control group.High peritumoral LVD was detected in 58.33%(P=0.008) of the experimental group .High intratumoral LVD was found in 48.33%(P=0.043) of the 60 cases of TSCC.The expression of VEGF-D and peritumoral LVD was significantly correlated with lymph node metastasis , clinical stage , living conditions and prognosis ( P<0.05 ) .High in-tratumoral LVD was only correlated with the classification of T staging of tumors .The expression of VEGF-D had a posi-tive correlation with peritumoral LVD(r=0.966, P<0.001).Conclusion VEGF-D and lymphangiogenesis are closely correlated with invasion , metastasis and prognosis of TSCC , and they can be important indicators to guide the diagnosis and treatment and predict the prognosis of TSCC .
