Abstract:Objective To investigate the correlation between the National Institutes of Health Chronic Prostatitis Symptom Index ( NIH-CPSI) and quantity of leukocytes and small particles of lecithin ( SPL) in expressed prostatic se-cretion ( EPS) in CategoriesⅢA,ⅢB and Ⅳprostatitis. Methods EPS samples were collected from 183 patients who came to Department of Andrology and Sexual Medicine, diagnosed with Categories ⅢA,ⅢB or Ⅳ prostatitis. Each sub-ject filled out NIH-CPSI questionnaire, and the amount of leukocytes and SPL in EPS was measured.Correlation between NIH-CPSI and the amount of leukocyte and SPL in EPS in CategoriesⅢA,ⅢB andⅣprostatitis was analyzed. Results There was no rank correlation between NIH-CPSI and the amount of leukocyte and SPL in EPS in Category ⅢA pa-tients (P>0.05).There was no rank correlation between leukocyte count and the amount of SPL in CategoryⅢA patients (P>0.05).There was no rank correlation between NIH-CPSI and the amount of SPL in EPS in Category ⅢB patients (P>0.05).There was no rank correlation between the amount of leukocyte and the amount of SPL in EPS in CategoryⅣpatients ( P>0.05) .Conclusion There was no evident correlation between symptom severity and the amount of leuko-cytes and SPL in EPS in different categories of prostatitis. It is not reliable to evaluate the severity of chronic prostatitis with leukocyte and SPL count. The negative effects of chronic prostatitis are mainly from the severity of symptoms.Symp-tom alleviation should be the focus in clinical diagnosis and management of the disease.
