Relationship between type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity
Abstract：Objective To study the reationship between obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods According to WHO (1985) criteria of diabetes mellitus and impaired glucose tolerance, 11 650 residents aged from 20 to 70 years and in over 14 areas of Guangdong Province were surveyed. Results The prevalence of obesity (body mass index ≥27) were 7.9%. The prevalences of diabetes and IGT in the population whose BMI ranging 25～30 were 3 and 2.5 times higher than the normal BMI subjects respectively. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that age, body mass index and the waist to hip ratio (WHR) were independent risk factors of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Conclusion Increased body mass index was significantly associated with higher prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
