Hepatitis viruses in hepatocellular carcinoma
Abstract:Objective To investigate the pattern of hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV) and hepatitis G virus (HGV) in tissues of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and para-HCC. Methods HBV S antigen (HBsAg), HCV NS5 antigen (HCAg) and HGV NS5 antigen (HGAg) were detected respectively in paraffin-embedded HCC tissues from 26 cases of patients with HCC by using immunohistochemical method (SPAB) with three monoclonal antibodies of anti-HBs, anti-HCV NS5 and anti-HGV NS5. Results The positive rate of HBsAg, HCAg and HGAg was 65%(17/26), 50%(13/26) and 35%(9/26), respectively. There were overlapping infection of HBV/HCV/HGV in 7 cases and HBV/HCV in 4 cases. 6 cases of HBV, 2 cases of HCV and 2 cases of HGV were all single infection. 5 cases were negative for three antigens. there were significant difference between HBV and HGV infection and no significant difference between HBV and HCV, HCV and HGV infection. All three antigens expressed in cytoplasma of liver or HCC cells, in thin granular pattern. Expression of the three antigens in HCC cells was weaker than that in para-HCC cells. Conclusion There are high infection rates of HBV, HCV and HGV in patients with HCC, in the order of HBV, HCV and HGV. HBV infection may play an important role, in the development of HCC while HCV and HGV infecction are related factors.
