Abstract:Objective To explore the protective role of reduced glutathione (GSH) in brain injury of neonatal hypoxic-ischemia encephalopathy. Methods 45 patients were divided into two groups randomly: group I (n=22, treatment with GSH) and group Ⅱ (n=23). Serum glulathione peroxidase (GSH-PX) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were measured in neonetes with acute hypoxic-ischemia encephalopathy before and after the treatment and in 20 healthy neonates. Results Seurm GSH-PX and SOD increased after treatment in group Ⅰ (P<0.01). Serum GSH-PX and SOD were not significantly different before and after treatment in group Ⅱ (P>0.05).Serum GSH-PX and SOD increased in group Ⅰ after treatment (P<0.01). Conclusion GSH has a protective role for brain injury in neonatal hypoxic-ischemia encephalopathy, and mainly due to increased oxidases activility by GSH to inhibit the formation of free radicals.
