Estrogen modulate the activity of nitric oxide synthase in vascular endothelial cell
Abstract:Objective To investigate the effect of estrogen on vascular endothelial nitric oxide synthase (NOS).Methods Rat vascular endothelial cells(EC) were cultured according to the block explanting method and propagated in phenol-red free 1640 medium. The cells were treated with 10 nmol 17β-estradiol.Results Treatment with 10 nmol 17β-estradiol over 8 hours to 24 hours significantly enhanced NOS activity (E2 vs control 8 h, P<0.05; 16 h, 24 h, P<0.01) in EC.Conclusion 17β-estradiol enhance the activity of NOS in vascular endothelial cells, which may explain the benificial effect of estrogen in the prevention of atherosclerosis.
