Abstract:Objective To study the role of CA125, CA153 and CEA in the diagnosis of female pelvic masses. Methods Sera from 317 patients suffering from pelvic masses were assayed for tumor-associated antigen CA125, CA153 and CEA by Microparticle Enzyme Immunoassay (MEIA).Results In distinguishing between malignant and benign masses, CA125 had a sensitivity of 52% and a specificity of 81% at a threshold level of 35 u/ml, while having a sensitivity of 44% and a specificity of 87% at a elevated threshold level of 65 u/ml. CA153 yielded a sensitivity of 23% with a specificity of 94% at a threshold level of 25 u/ml. Remarkably high specificity of 100% and low sensitivity of 5% were detected at a threshold level of 5 ng/ml of CEA. Sensitivity was improved without remarkable change in specificity when combining CA125 and CA153. No change occurred when combining CEA with CA125 and CA153.Conclusion CA125 may be an appropriate tumor marker in differentiating pelvic masses. Combinative use of CA125 and CA153 helps to improve the results. Clinical value of CEA is limited. It is recommended that CA125 and CA153 be combined with other measurements in differentiating pelvic masses.
