Abstract:To understand the precipitation characteristics and diurnal variations in Zhaoqing, statistical analyses were conducted using daily precipitation data from six national stations from 1975 to 2024 and hour-ly precipitation data from 2008 to 2024.The results indicate that precipitation in Zhaoqing exhibits signifi-cant interannual fluctuations and spatial differences, with annual precipitation, heavy rainfall days, and rainfall amounts being higher in the northern regions than in the south. The seasonal variation of precipitation is pronounced, with heavy rainfall mainly concentrated during the flood season(April-September),and ex-treme precipitation events occurring 1-2 times per year on average. The diurnal variation of precipitation during the flood season shows no significant regional differences, with precipitation amount, frequency, and intensity generally exhibiting a unimodal pattern peaking in the early evening. The diurnal variations in pre-cipitation amount and frequency also display certain seasonal changes.During the flood season, precipitation events lasting 2-6 hours contribute significantly to total rainfall, while 1-hour events are the most frequent. The highest precipitation intensity occurs in events lasting 20-21 hours.Short-duration heavy rainfall events are more frequent in the afternoon, peaking at 17:00,while precipitation intensity is higher around 21:00 and between 06:00-08:00.
