Abstract:To enhance the capability of responding to the risks posed by extreme short-term heavy rain-fall,this study utilized hourly precipitation data from 316 automatic weather stations in Guangzhou from 2014 to 2023 to analyze the occurrence patterns of extreme short-term heavy rainfall in the region. The results in-dicate that:(1)Extreme short-term heavy rainfall in Guangzhou primarily occurs from May to June and Au-gust to September, with the highest probability of occurrence between 15:00 and 18:00;(2)such rainfall events are more frequent in the windward slopes of the mountainous areas in the central and northern parts of Guangzhou and the coastal funnel-shaped regions in the south;(3)geographic and topographic factors,as well as precipitation weather systems, can directly influence the occurrence of extreme short-term heavy rain-fall;and(4)the extreme heavy rainfall event on September 8,2023,was triggered by the lingering residual circulation of Typhoon"Haikui"combined with the southwest monsoon, leading to a"train effect."This study provides valuable insights for improving early warning systems and urban flood management strategies in Guangzhou, contributing to better preparedness and resilience against extreme weather events.
