Abstract:Based on the daily rainfall data from a national meteorological observation station in Kaiping and a regional network of automatic weather stations, this paper analyzed the characteristics of heavy rain in every parts of Kaiping. The results are shown as follows. The annual number of heavy rain days tended to vary in generally the same tendency as the annual amount of heavy rain across the city, with the southern part having the most number and amount and the central part the least. For all parts of the city, the monthly variations of heavy rain days were bimodal, with the peaks in May and August respectively.Specifically, the number of heavy rain days from May to October took up 81.3%of the yearly total, suggesting that it was more likely for heavy rain weather to take place in the rainy season. For all observation sites of the city, the annually first date of heavy rain concentrated in March and May and the annually last date in September and October, generally consistent with the starting and ending dates of the local rainy season. For most parts of the city, the diurnal peaks of rain amount, frequency and intensity occurred post-midday or in late afternoon and early evening.
