Abstract:Using the Tropical Cyclone Best Track Dataset compiled by the Shanghai Typhoon Institute,China Meteorological Administration, and surface observations from five national meteorological stations in Heyuan, this paper selected 165 historical typhoons that had high impact on the city before isolating those with intense rainfall or strong winds, which were collectively referred to as"high-impact typhoons for Heyuan"by the percentile method.By statistically determining the climatological characteristics of these high-impact typhoons, the sources of genesis, landfall locations, landfall intensity, migrating paths and key areas of paths were compared. The results are shown as follows. There were a total of 31 high-impact ty-phoons for Heyuan from 1957 to 2022.They were mostly recorded from July to September and mainly gener-ated over the ocean surface east off the Philippines and around Guam. The typhoons with intense rainfall dif-fered from those with strong winds in terms of the landfall location and intensity. The intense rainfall and strong winds brought to Heyuan by the high-impact typhoons were not just linearly correlated with the ty-phoon intensity and its location relative to the city. There were three key areas of paths for the typhoons with intense rainfall:a)the area that extended from Yangjiang to Guangzhou in the west of the Pearl River estu-ary;b)the area that was to the east of Pearl River estuary, and included coastal Shanwei and the north of Heyuan to the north;and c)the area that started from Zhangzhou,Fujian and then extended northwest to the north of Meizhou. There were two key areas of paths for the typhoons with strong winds:a)the offshore area from the Pearl River estuary to eastern Guangdong province;and b)the area that covered the east of the Pearl River estuary, coastal Shanwei and the north of Heyuan to the north.
