Abstract:Based on the 1961 to 2022 data of daily rainfall from the meteorological observation stations in Guangdong,2.5° ×2.5° NCEP/NCAR global reanalysis and 1° × 1° Hadley Centre sea-Ice and Sea Sur-face Temperature(HadISST),this work defined indexes for key marine zones to analyze the factor of sea surface temperatures that played a role in the earlier-than-usual onset of the 2022 rainy season in the prov-ince.The results are shown as follows. When the rainy season started in 2022,both the meridional and zon-al winds had strong, positive anomalous centers and their positive-value centers superimposed with each oth-er for the first time since March of the year.In the years with relatively early onset of the rainy season,it is usually warm in the preceding tropical Indian Ocean, the western waters of Maritime Continent and the Kuro-shio Current region as well as the equatorial eastern and central Pacific while it is cool in the central part of the West Pacific warm pool. The opposite is true in the years with later-than-usual onset of the rainy season. It is suggested that a dominant precursor for the earlier-than-usual start of the Guangdong rainy season in 2022 may be a warming signal sending from the waters of Mascarene Islands in the tropical South Indian O-cean and the western waters of Maritime Continent rather than an ENSO signal.
