Abstract:For the purpose of improving the level of drought monitoring in Guangdong, this paper used the observational data of day-to-day air temperature, precipitation and relative humidity taken from 86 na-tional meteorological stations across the province to set up a number of indexes for monitoring flash droughts in the province and studied the spatiotemporal distributions of the local flash droughts and the differences with traditional droughts,on the basis of relevant research results, technologies and methods in monitoring meteorological droughts and with the reference of the three factors above. The results are shown as follows.(1)In Guangdong, flash droughts usually take place in summer, with July having the most incidences(a monthly average of 4.1 sites/times).They are also quite frequent in late spring and early autumn, different from traditional droughts which mainly occur in autumn and winter.(2)Flash droughts frequently happen in the Leizhou Peninsula,Chaozhan region and Meizhou, coinciding with the frequent areas of traditional droughts.(3)Under the general background of climate warming, flash droughts tend to increase in parts of the province, especially so since the 2000s.From 2011 to 2021,flash droughts were first observed in the coastal areas of southern Guangdong with the frequency increasing from less than three sites/times for the pe-riod 2001 to 2010 to more than 12 sites/times for the time 2011 to 2021.
