Abstract:Biochar returning to arable soils as a means of carbon sequestration is an eco-friendly and sustainable strategy, which aids in attaining multiple goals including carbon sequestration, efficient management of agricultural and forestry residues and soil improvement.Quantification of biochar in field soil not only enables the measurement of its long-term and stable carbon storage, providing data support for carbon sinks, but also serves as an assessment criterion for biochar stability within the soil.Biochar can be classified as black carbon. Therefore, based on the determination methods of black carbon in the environment, quantification methods are divided into four main categories according to the principle of measurement,i.e.,thermal oxidation method, chemical oxidation method, benzene poly-carboxylic acids(BPCAs)molecular marker method, and optical method. This review provides a comprehensive summary of the measurement principle, technical characteristics, and advantages and disadvantages associated with all mentioned methods. It aims to provide the technical references for researchers to efficiently select appropriate biochar quantification methods in practical scenarios.
