Abstract:To investigate the influence of fiber-reinforced composite(FRC)and multistrand stainless steel wire(MSSW)retainers on maintaining periodontal health. Sixty patients completing orthodontic treatment were divided into two groups with FRC and MSSW randomly. Sulcus bleeding index(SBI)and pocket depth(PD)were recorded immeditately, 6 months and 12 months after the retainers bonded onto the lower front teeth. Results Statistic significance was found at the increase of SBI between the immediate and 6 months, 12 months after bonding for both groups(P<0.01), while no statistic significance difference was found in PD among the three time points(P>0.05). There were no significance differences between FRC and MSSW groups on both SBI and PD at each time point(P>0.05). It is necessary to strength oral hygiene and periodontal care with fixed lingual retainers to keep the stability effect after orthodontic treatment.
