Abstract:This research explores the cross-border tourism trends between Hong Kong, Macao and Guangdong province as well as the geographical distributions of out-flow and in-flow in 2001, 2007 and 2012 in the context of tourism integration. The data analysis shows that the number of cross-border tourists between Hong Kong, Macao and Guangdong province has tremendously increased. However, by comparing the number of tourists to Hong Kong & Macao from Guangdong province and the number of tourists to Guangdong province from Hong Kong&Macao, there is a dynamic process of change between the two regions. From 2001 to 2003, Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao cross-border tourist flow is not balanced. Hong Kong and Macao inbound tourists is significantly greater than the number of tourists from Guangdong to Hong Kong&Macao. In 2001, Hong Kong&Macao inbound tourists are about twice the number of tourists from Guangdong to Hong Kong&Macao. The gap is gradually shrinking each year. On the other hand, the geographical distribution of the flow of tourists in prefectural level in Guangdong province is not balanced either, mainly distributed in the Pearl River Delta region. However, both the in-flow and out-flow are gradually spread to the west and north part of Guangdong province. The findings have implications on the evaluation of the integration of tourism industries between Hong Kong, Macao and Guangdong province. The social problems brought by the deepened integration need to be further studied.
