ZHANG Yujie
Abstract:From the nineteenth century to the early twentieth century, the introduction and localization of lithographic printing in Guangzhou reveal the profound impact of modern printing technology on local culture and society. As a frontline port for Sino-western cultural exchange,Guangzhou adopted lithographic techniques relatively early, enabling this modern printing method to evolve from an initial tool of religious dissemination into a crucial medium driving the reform of the publishing industry, the spread of ideas, and social change.Lithographic printing not only transformed the modes of knowledge production and information circulation in Guangzhou, but also became deeply involved in educational enlightenment, the construction of public opinion, and the formation of regional cultural identity. It thus emerged as a vital force propelling Guangzhou's transformation from a traditional commercial city into a modern cultural center.By comparing the developmental trajectories of the printing industries in Guangzhou and Shanghai, this study offers a concrete perspective for understanding the multiple pathways of local modernization in modern China.
