The friendship and literary expression in Zhang Jiuling's reciprocal poetry
PAN Chenjing
Abstract:Zhang Jiuling currently has 222 poems in his collection,of which approximately 97 works are for social and gift giving, accounting for about 44%.Overall,these poems reflect various types of friendships formed throughout Zhang Jiuling's official career. They reveal his psychological state as a low-ranking official, his conflicting choices between pursuing office and retreating from it during times of hardship, and his connections with younger contemporaries like Meng Haoran.A closer examination of the friendships depicted in his exchange poems reveals not only implicit political aspirations shared between Zhang and his friends but also his image as a modest and upright gentleman.Furthermore, his clear, straightforward poetic style played a guiding role in shaping the poetic landscape of the prosperous Tang dynasty.
