A study of the manifestation of translator subjectivity in the English translation of Red Sorghum
YU Yajing
Abstract:Translator subjectivity is a significant topic in translation studies, and the academic community has extensively explored interpretive approaches to translator subjectivity and its relationship with translation strategies. However, the manifestations of translator subjectivity at the textual level remain underexplored.Red Sorghum, one of the most renowned works of modern and contemporary Chinese literature in the Western world and one of Goldblatt's favorite pieces, exemplifies his distinctive translation style.Research reveals that translator subjectivity in the English translation of Red Sorghum is primarily manifested in three forms:1)the enhancement of poetic features and aesthetic effects in the translation, including the vivid portrayal of imagery and the interchange between similes and metaphors;2)adaptations influenced by target culture and ideology, such as rewriting, rearrangement of narrative sequences, deletions, and additional explanatory notes;and 3)mistranslations resulting from the overstepping of translator subjectivity boundaries.
