KUANG Qianhua
Abstract:The ancestral home of the Wu Rongguang family is Yanling,Jiangsu, and they migrated south to Guangdong during the Song Dynasty. In the eighth year of the Chongzhen reign of the Ming Dynasty(1636),Wu Hualong led his tribe to migrate to Foshan and became the first ancestor of the Wu family in Foshan. The family quickly integrated into local society, amassed substantial wealth, and established the"Dashu Hall"as their ancestral compound, which later developed into Foshan's most representative wealthy garden estate during the Qing Dynasty. The family reached its zenith during the eighth generation with Wu Rongguang(1773-1843).Wu Rongguang entered the government as a Jinshi(metropolitan graduate)and held important positions in multiple provinces, achieving remarkable political achievements. In terms of academia,he has a keen interest in the study of gold, stone, calligraphy and painting, and his works include"Wu Rongguang's Autobiographical Chronicles","Summer Records of the Xinchou Year",and"Records of Gold and Stone Inscriptions in the Yunqing Pavilion",earning him the title of a great scholar in Lingnan. His great-grandson Wu Jianren achieved fame as a master of late-Qing exposure literature through his masterpiece"The Strange Events of the Last Twenty Years",demonstrating the family's profound cultural legacy.Centered around the Dashu hall, the Wu family developed an impressive complex of garden architecture in Foshan's Guanyintang neighborhood, whose design principles significantly influenced the development of Lingnan garden art.Under Wu Rongguang's leadership, the family actively participated in Foshan's public affairs-including water conservancy projects, the expansion of Tianxin academy, and local security maintenance-thereby both expanding the family's influence and making substantial contributions to regional development.
