The effect of home modification on the life satisfaction of the elderly:A mediating effect analysis based on activity ability

Abstract：At present,the majority of elderly people in China choose to live at home for elderly care,and the family is the main place for elderly care.Adapting their living environment to aging is conducive to improving their life satisfaction and helping them achieve the transition from"aging"to"enjoying aging".Based on the data of the 2020 China Elderly Social Panel Survey,the OLS model was used to explore the impact of home modification on the life satisfaction of the elderly,and the mediating role of the elderly's activity ability was analyzed by using the stepwise regression and bootstrap methods.The study found that home modification for the elderly is beneficial to improve the life satisfaction of the elderly.Activity ability plays a partial mediating role between home modification and life satisfaction of the elderly.The impact of home adaptation on the life satisfaction of the elderly in rural areas is significantly higher than that of the elderly in urban areas.It is suggested to implement the strategy of differential aging-appropriate retrofitting,reduce the obstacles to the popularization of aging-appropriate retrofitting to the elderly,highlight the importance of renovation for the elderly in rural areas,and improve the life satisfaction of the elderly.
