Critique of"AI empowers competition"narrative:A threefold reflection on technology, systems, and ethics
WU Shaoping
Abstract:Targeting the popular assertion"AI won't replace you,but someone using AI will",this analysis reveals its oversimplified essence. The assertion frames the impact of artificial intelligence(AI)within the narrow perspective of individual skill competition, overlooking the profound structural changes it triggers.Firstly,it overlooks AI's technological mediation:AI is not merely a tool as it also reshapes human perception, cognitive patterns, and practical skills, challenging traditional notions of subjectivity.Secondly,it lacks necessary systems thinking:it ignores the fundamental reconstruction of work systems, organizational forms, and value distribution logics driven by AI,where individual efforts may become misaligned due to systemic shifts.Thirdly,it suspends key ethical considerations:viewing AI as a neutral tool obscures its embedded biases, impacts on power relations, and broad socio-ethical responsibilities.Understanding the true impact of AI requires moving beyond this"empowerment competition"narrative towards a systemic reflection on technology-society interactions, value reconstruction, and ethical implications.
