On the impact of bilateral intellectual property protection on the quality of manufacturing export products

Abstract:Taking the manufacturing industry in Guangdong province as the research object, the data of 2487 manufacturing products exported from Guangdong Province to 236 countries in the China Customs Import and Export Full Port Database from 2000 to 2020 were matched with the bilateral Intellectual Property Protection(IPP)data of Guangdong province(the export origin)and the import destinations.By constructing a panel fixed-effects model, this paper thoroughly examines the impact of bilateral IPP on the quality of exported manufacturing products and its underlying mechanisms. The findings reveal that an increase in bilateral IPP levels contributes to the upgrading of export product quality in Guangdong's manufacturing sector, with the IPP level of the export origin exhibiting a more pronounced effect.Furthermore, the technological spillover effects of FDI create a masking effect in the relationship between bilateral IPP and export product quality, while independent innovation capability plays a significant mediating role only in the impact of the export origin's IPP on export product quality. Finally, heterogeneity analysis indicates that the influence of bilateral IPP on export product quality varies by technological intensity and industry type.Specifically, the IPP of the export origin has a significantly positive impact on the product quality of all technology-intensive industries, whereas the IPP of the import destination only significantly enhances the quality of high-technology-intensive products. The research results remain robust after rigorous reliability tests.
