Guangdong engineer Kuang Sunmou and railway construction in modern China

Abstract:Kuang Sunmou was an outstanding Guangdong railway engineer during the late Qing dynasty and the Republic of China.As a child studying in the United States,he specialized in civil engineering and later returned to China after being ordered to drop out of school,devoting himself to the railway and mining industries.During this period,he recommended Zhan Tianyou to become an engineer for China Railway Corporation,starting Zhan Tianyou's glorious railway career.Kuang Sunmou successively presided over the construction or management of railway trunk lines such as Jingsui,Yuehan,Jinpu,and Jinghan,participated in the construction of railways such as Jinggu,Guanwai,Zhuping,and Jingzhang,and held social positions such as the president of the Chinese Society of Engineers.He was highly praised by the Nationalist government and appointed as an engineering consultant for the Ministry of Railways,leaving a brilliant chapter in the history of modern transportation in China.However,the contribution of Kuang Sunmou to the development of modern railways is not well-known to later generations.It is necessary to explore and write about it in order to enrich the research on the history of modern transportation figures in China and enrich the treasure trove of historical figures in Lingnan.
