A study on the life of Lingnan eminent monk Chengjiu and his Buddhist thought

Abstract:Chengjiu was a famous monk in Lingnan in the early Qing Dynasty.He was exceptionally talented from a young age and became a monk at the age of 41.He set up a number of Buddhist temples in Lingnan and resided in Foshan for many times,which greatly influenced Lingnan Buddhism and Foshan Buddhism.Cheng's Buddhist thought has a distinct tendency of compatibility and harmony.He believes that Confucianism,Buddhism and Taoism are the consistent,and in practice,they are compatible with all sects.He studied Zen,Pure Land and Lü,and continued the two sects of Linji and Caodong.Chengjiu praised Wenzi Zen for attaching importance to the role of text sutra teaching in enlightenment instead of attaching importance to the text,which should be the true meaning of Wenzi Zen.
