From"great refusal"to"slow modernity":On Agger's inheritance and development of Marcuse's critical theory

Abstract:Agger not only inherits Marcuse's critical thought but also advances it,formulating the thought of"slow modernity".Firstly,Agger adopts the"great refusal"and promotes a lifestyle characterized by"a sense of detachment".Secondly,he extends Marcuse's theory of"false needs"into the"theory of alienated consumption";Thirdly,Agger builds upon Marcuse's vision of a"new sensibility"to advocate for the pursuit of"slow modernity".The thoughts of"great refusal"and"slow modernity"offer valuable insights for addressing the issues of modernity.It prompts people to reflect on consumerism,technological control and ecological crises,and to pursue individual liberation and sustainable development.
