New insights and analysis on the Chinese translation of"Der Wille zur Macht"
LIU Shengmin
Abstract:"Der Wille zur Macht"occupies a central position in Nietzsche's philosophy. It represents an essential definition of beings as a whole. It is also a key node and indispensable research task for understanding western philosophy.By critically inheriting Schopenhauer's concept"will",Nietzsche develops his unique idea of"Der Wille zur Macht",which can be directly translated as"will to strength/power"etymologically.There are various historical Chinese-translated names of"Der Wille zur Macht"such as from"will to power"to"strong-willed power",but each shows limitations overweigh their advantages. The new Chinese translation"Quli Yizhi"(趋力意志)offers a fresh approach to the Chinese-translated name of"Der Wille zur Macht",closer to the philosophical connotation of"Der Wille zur Macht",emphasizing that the essence of will directed towards"power/strength",as well as its positive and dynamic characteristics that seek higher and richer forms of life.At the same time,it also conforms to the principle of simplicity in translation, and also provides a clearer perspective for understanding Nietzsche's philosophy.
