Abstract:Discourse is the basic unit of translation from the perspective of discourse linguistics. As two main factors of discourse, cohesion serves as a way of combining the sentences by means of grammar, vocabulary and others while coherence serves as a way of combinatorial sequence and smoothness. This paper, based on examples from The Epic of Baeuqloegdoz, aims to discuss the function and value of these two factors in the development of discourse in target language. Thus in ethnical English translation, translators should make fully consideration of cohesion and coherence so as to produce discourse successfully in target language.
