The Interpretation of Tradition and Extension of Symbols---An Evolution on Folk Custom“Xing Tongji”in Foshan

Abstract：Tongji Bridge is one of the famous bridges in Foshan. For several centuries,“Xing Tongji”has been one of the folk activities with local characteristics in water villages. The custom has the same equal satisfactory results with those in the north and the south and other regions about “bridge walking” “walking for peace”etc. The sustenance of people for this is to pursue peace, healthiness and happiness. With the development of social culture and the practice of the change of existing habits and custom, emergency of new elements, and the transition of the original culture symbol, the folk culture is adapting to social development and is conducting self-adjustment.
