On the Theory of the Philosophy of the Lingnan Mind
LIU Xing-bang
Abstract:The philosophy of the Lingnan mind was initiated by Chen Baisha and epitomized by Zhan Ganquan. Chen Baisha constructed the naturalistic idea of mind named as “Self-satisfied Learning” and implemented the transformation of Neo-Confucianism to the philosophy of mind in the Ming dynasty. Zhan Ganquan developed the temperament theory based on “appreciating the natural principles anywhere” forming another philosophy of mind different from Wang Yangming. The core concept of the philosophy of the Lingnan mind is that there is no inside or outside in our mind and no reason either outside or inside. It is quite different from Cheng and Zhu’s Neo-Confucianism and Wang Yangming’s study of“being in the inside”.
