The Inevitability of the Disillusion of the Ideal of Androgyny——A New Analysis on the Ending ofGonewiththeWind
GU Ya-juan
Abstract:Analyzed from a feminist point of view, the ending of Gone with the Wind is unavoidable. The protagonist of the novel, Scarlett O'Hara, dares to rebel against the traditional culture and challenge the set rules of the patriarchal society. To some extent, her behavior bears distinguished feminine traits. However, Rhett leaves her by the end of the story. This reveals that the patriarchal society that Scarlett lives in would not give her the freedom to express her true self. The novel thereby expresses Margaret Mitchellˊs wish of achieving the ideal of androgyny someday in the future.
