On Pragmatic Failures of English Politeness in the Context of Hakka Dialect
Abstract:As a universal phenomenon, politeness plays a key role in prescribing individual's linguistic behaviors and coordinating interpersonal relations. But because of their different cultural backgrounds, Hakka in the Han nationality and the English people vary greatly in their way and custom of showing politeness. In cross--cultural communications, as they know little of the English politeness culture, Hakka students tend to subconsciously use their own concept of politeness to guide their thinking and behavior, and transfer politeness maxims in the Hakka culture to the English communication, thus producing lots of pragmatic failures.
