A Glimpse of Cantonese-Mandarin Contact ——from a Use of jiu in Hong Kong Mandarin-Media
Abstract:An investigation is made with respect to the use of jiu in written and spoken texts produced by Mandarin media in Hong Kong. It is shown that this use of jiu is not found in previous descriptive works both on Mandarin and on Cantonese. The usage of jiu is the evidence to illustrate that Hong Kong Mandarin is quite similar to Putonghua, but there is still difference. This paper concludes that Mandarin used in Hong Kong media is a mixture of the mainland Mandarin and Hong Kong Cantonese.
