From Spring and Autumn Encyclical Festival to Folk Ritual: Analysis on Foshan Sacrificial Rites of the North God in the Ming-Qing Dynasty
Abstract:Spring and Autumn Encyclical Festival was awarded by Ming government for commemorating North God's manifestation in defending disaster.Since Jingtai years of Ming dynasty to Qing dynasty, the official sacrificial ceremony was held twice a year in spring and autumn,in spectacular scale, and it had been the upper gentry privilege in Foshan.Meanwhile, the folk ritual provided a platform to ordinary people for having chances to participate the sacrificial rites, which allowed citizens to have a close contact with the god and to receive spiritual comfort.Official sacrificial ceremony and folk ritual, which goes side-by-side and enjoys mutuality, help enhance the sense of belonging to the Foshan citizens and local society integration.
