On Newton's Spirit of Modern Science
Abstract:In early modern scientific activities, there existed two parallel trends: the physical-mathematical and the empirical-experimental trends.Newton unified these two trends in his own scientific practice and then formed his thoughts of experimental philosophy. While engaging in mathematical investigation,Newton came to form his notion of scientific experiment in accord with his physical investigation. He pursued for certainty based on experiment and aimed at totally abandoning the metaphysical speculative trend from the research of natural philosophy and natural science. He also aimed at testable, precisely mathematical scientific theories. This pursuit is not only a fundamental reform in the sense of knowledge view,it is more a sublation,in the methodological sense, towards his predecessor's spirit of methodology in modern science.
