A Study of Foshan Woodblock Printing in Ming and Qing Dynasties
Abstract:Foshan woodblock printing originated from Song Dynasty,developed in Ming Dynasty,and flourished in Qing Dynasty.In the early period of Qing Dynasty,Foshan became one of China's four major production bases of wood engraving new-year paintings.In Guangdong region,from the mid-Qing Dynasty,Guangzhou,Chaozhou and Foshan developed to be the three major woodblock printing centers,and Foshan also became one of the big distribution centers for commercial woodblock prints.Based on the existing research,with studying historical materials,interviewing with printing artists and studying sites,it is not difficult to find out that the important status of Foshan woodblock printing reflected not only the practical demands in Foshan district in Ming and Qing Dynasties,but also its good business environment in the handicraft industry.
