The effects of drainage through the anus on the plasma levels of endotoxin and tumor necrosis factor after one-stage resection for obstruction associated with left colonic carcinoma
Abstract:Objective To observe the effects of drainage through anus on theplasma levels of endotoxin(ET) and tumor necrosis factor(TNF) after one-stage resection for obstruction associated with left colonic carcinoma. Methods Thirty-eight patients underwent one-stage resection for obstruction associated with left colonic carcinoma.Among them,19 did not undergo drainage through anus (group A), while others did (group B). The plasma levels of ET and TNF were observed before and after operation. Results No significant difference was found in the levels of ET and TNF between A and B groups (P>0.05) before operation. After operation, the levels of ET and TNF decreased obviously. From the fourth day after operation, the levels of ET and TNF in group B became significantly lower than those in group A (P<0.05). Conclusion Drainage through anus can significantly reduce the levels of ET and TNF after one-stage resection for obstruction associated with left colonic carcinoma, and promote recovery of barrier function of the intestinal mucosa.
