Thoracic paravertebral space block for unilateral thoracotomy
Abstract:Objective To observe the effect of thoracic paravertebral spaceblock with bupivacaine-lidocaine mixture solution on hemodynamics and the efficiency of combined general anesthesia in unilateral thoracotomy. Method Twenty three patients undergoing unilateral thoracotomy were divided into paravertebral space block (n=11) and epidural block (n=12) groups. Hemodynamic changes after thoracic paravertebral space block were recorded and the minimal alveolar anesthetic concentration(MAC), blood pressure, heart rate monitored during operation. Result Slight changes in the hemodynamics were observed after successful induction of paravertebral space, and the MAC, arterial pressure and heart rate did not show much difference between the two groups during operation. Conclusion Paravertebral space block with 0.375% bupivacaine-1% lidocaine mixture solution may induce slight changes in the hemodynamics and when combined with general anesthesia, anesthetic effects similar to that of epidural block in unilateral thoracotomy was achieved.
