Abstract:Graphite felt(GF)was hydrothermally treated under the different conditions, such as dilute ammonia, dilute hydrofluoric acid, and mixture of ammonia and hydrofluoric acid(amino-fluorination).The surface morphology, chemical properties and their electrocatalytic properties of the untreated and treated GFs were characterized by scanning electron microscopy(SEM),X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS),electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS)and cyclic voltammetry(CV).The results show that the specific surface area and the content of O-contai-ning functional groups of the GFs increases after hydrothermal treatment under different condi-tions.In addition, the introduction of N-,F-containing functional groups significantly improves the electrocatalytic activity of GF to the redox reaction of VO +2/VO+2.Two vanadium redox flow batteries were constructed using a piece of amino-fluorinated GF and a piece of untreated GF as the positive electrode, respectively. The battery using the amino-fluorinated GF(soaked in dilute ammonia first, then adding the hydrofluoric acid)as the positive electrode shows the better per-formance w hen compared with the cell using untreated GF as positive electrode.
