Meta-analysis of extracorporeal shock wave therapy for spasticity after stroke

Abstract:Objective A Meta-analysis of the efficacy of extracorporeal shock wave therapy(ESWT)for spasticity after stroke.Methods The Cochrane Library,PubMed,Web of Science,MEDLINE(Ovid),China National Knowledge Infrastructure,and Wanfang databases were searched from their inception to May 2024.Randomized controlled trials comparing ESWT treatment(intervention group)with sham stimulation or conventional treatment(control group)were included.Results A total of 11 articles were included,including 426 stroke patients with spasticity.The short-term and long-term effects of treatment on spasticity after stroke were compared between the intervention group and the control group,the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05).The upper and lower limb spasticity after stroke were compared between the intervention group and the control group,the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05).Conclusion ESWT is effective in short-term and long-term treatment of spasticity after stroke and in the relief of spasticity in upper and lower limbs.
