Analysis of Risk Factors for Postoperative Infection After Brain Tumor Resection
Abstract:Objective To analyze the risk factors for postoperative infection after brain tumor resection. Methods A total of 57 patients who underwent brain tumor resection and developed postoperative infections between May 2022 and February 2024 at the First Affiliated Hospital of Air Force Medical University were selected as the infection group, including 32 males and 25 females with a mean age of (43.2±4.4) years (range 28–65 years). Another 171 patients who underwent brain tumor surgery without postoperative infection during the same period and were matched in gender and age were selected as the non-infection group, including 83 males and 88 females with a mean age of (41.3±5.12) years (range 26–68 years). The infection status, gender, age, tumor type, tumor location, maximum tumor diameter, extent of tumor resection, anesthesia method, duration of anesthesia, American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) classification, surgical type, number of surgeries, duration of surgery, intraoperative blood loss, total hospitalization days, preoperative hospitalization days, presence of cerebrospinal fluid leakage after surgery, and preoperative modified frailty index (mFI-5) scores were collected. Logistic multivariate regression analysis was used to identify the influencing factors. Results Among the 57 patients with postoperative infection, intracranial infection was the most common (82.5%), followed by lower respiratory tract infection (10.5%). Logistic regression analysis showed that tumor location in the infratentorial region, use of general anesthesia, undergoing a second surgery, surgery duration ≥ 3 hours, longer total hospitalization days, and preoperative mFI-5 score ≥ 2 points were all risk factors for postoperative infection in brain tumor patients (P < 0.05). Conclusion The risk factors for postoperative infection in brain tumor patients include tumor location in the infratentorial region, use of general anesthesia, undergoing a second surgery, surgery duration ≥ 3 hours, longer total hospitalization days, and preoperative mFI-5 score ≥ 2 points.
