A clinical therapeutic analysis of gamma knife treatment for 50 cases of pituitary pro-lactinomas

Abstract:Objective To investigate the clinical effectiveness of gamma knife treatment for pituitary prolactinomas and the endocrine response. Methods A retrospective study was performed on 127 patients with pituitary prolactinomas underwent gamma knife treatment from March 2004 to February 2013. Among those cases,50 cases with complete follow-up data were retrospectively analyzed. Surrounded target volume by 60% isodose curve in TPS. The central dose between 30 and 60 Gy, average 46. 7 Gy. The range of marginal was 12-30 Gy, average 23. 2 Gy. The optic nerve dose was less than 9 Gy. Results Amongthe patients with clinical symptoms,15 ( 30%) case were complete responsed,31 ( 62%) case were partial responsed,4(8%)case were no change. The tumour control rates were 82%(41/50)in one year and 90%(45/50)in two years,6%(3/50)were no change and 4%(2/50)were increased. Serum prolactin 40%(20/50)were normal,52%(26/50) were decreased,8%(4/50)were increased. No one was hypopituitarism. Conclusion Gamma knife treatment used pituita-ry prolactinomas not only controls the growth of tumour,but also improves the dysfunction of endocrine. It should be an ef-fective therapeutic means for clinical treatment of pituitary prolactinomas.
