Abstract:Despite the ongoing improvement of the trauma care system and the deepening understanding of its pathophysiological mechanisms, trauma is still one of the main causes of adult death.Ionic calcium plays an im-portant role in coagulation, platelet adhesion, and contraction of myocardium and smooth muscle cells.Severe inju-ries,severe shock, massive blood transfusion and infusion can easily cause disorders in calcium regulation and result in hypocalcemia.Hypocalcemia, which may complicate with hypothermia, coagulopathy and acidosis in severe trauma patients, plays a key role in the prognosis of such patients and thus ranks the fourth component of the diamond of death. However,it seems that hypocalcemia has not attracted widespread attention among clinicians. Therefore, this paper reviews the definition, etiology, incidence and impact of hypocalcemia on trauma patients, aiming to explain the incidence and impact of hypocalcemia on trauma patients,so as to strengthen the understanding and attention of cli-nicians on hypocalcemia, and then improve its management in trauma patients.
