Geriatric trauma treatment and rehabilitation should not be ignored

Abstract:The features of trauma are changing due to an aging population.Geriatric patients represent an increasing number and proportion of traumatic morbidity and mortality.Geriatric trauma is a looming public health crisis.Elderly trauma patients present unique challenges and face more significant obstacles in outcome, including evaluation, triage criteria, and early resuscitative efforts.Understanding age-related physiologic changes will help guide treatment.This paper reviews the development of foreign elderly trauma medicine, emphasize on collecting elderly trauma patient epidemiological data and establishing the importance of national trauma database in China.Exploring the geriatric trauma triage, establishing the evaluation system, preventing the complications of post-trauma, and advising intensive care treatment, nutrition, rehabilitation stage, and follow-up management are helpful for outcome.At the same time, attention should be paid to the basic research of characterized diseases after trauma in the elderly, and the transformation of the clinical application should be strengthened.
