Abstract:Objective To explore the relevance of severity and cerebral edema with serum S-100B and MMP-9 protein levels in traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients. Methods A total of 120 patients with traumatic brain injury were enrolled, with 74 males and 46 females and the average age was 40.2 (18-80) years.GSC score was 3-8 in 60 severe cases and 6-15 in the other 60 cases.Another 60 cases of healthy persons were selected as normal control group. The S-100B and MMP-9 protein concentration 1d,3d,5d,7d after injury was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELSA) to investigate the correlation of serum S-100B and MMP-9 protein levels with the GCS score at admission,GOS score 3months after injury and brain edema with cranial CT.Results The serum S-100B and MMP-9 protein concentration for TBI group was significantly higher than that of the control group (P<0.05).The concentration of serum S-100B and MMP-9 protein was positively correlated with the severity of TBI patients and cerebral edema, while was negatively correlated with GCS and GOS score.Recovery state was poor in 24 cases and good in 96 cases. The levels of S-100B and MMP-9 protein in patients with good recovery had a significant difference (P<0.05) compared with those with poor recovery.Higher serum S-100B and MMP-9 protein content implied more severe TBI,more severe brain edema, and worse prognosis. Conclusion The serum S-100B and MMP-9 protein levels of TBI patients could be used as an important index to judge the severity and cerebral edema, providing a way for the TBI treatment.
