Deltoid ligament ruptures accompanying lateral malleolus fractures: should it be repaired or not?
ZONG Zhao-wen
Abstract:Whether a ruptured deltoid ligament accompanying lateral malleolus fracture should be repaired is still controversial.Traditionally,it was thought that only if there is interposition on the medial side after adequate reduction in the fibular fracture is repair of the deltoid ligament required. However, findings in recent years revealed that unrepaired deep layer of deltoid ligament accompanying lateral malleolus fracture might result in proprioceptive imbalance, functional ankle instability and early osteoarthritis,et al,thus the ruptured ligament should be repaired. In addition, even superficial layer of deltoid ligament should be repaired in athletes.
